Ingredients

  • 6 Granny Smith apples
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 sheet of puff pastry
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Instructions

  •  First of all, pre heat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Then peel and core the apples and cut them into quarters.
  • Take a 10-inch cast-iron skillet and melt butter over medium heat, then sprinkle sugar evenly on top.
  • Next arrange the apple quarters on top of the butter and sugar, fitting them tightly, rounded-side down.
  • Cook over medium heat until sugar dissolves and begins to caramelize, about 15-20 minutes.
  • Lay the puff pastry over the top of the apples and tuck in the edges around the apples.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until pastry is golden and crisp.
  • Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes. Carefully invert onto a large plate.
  • Serve warm, preferably with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Baking this dessert is a sensory experience all on its own – the apples, butter, and sugar melt together on the stove, creating a tantalizing aroma that fills the kitchen. Then, the puff pastry is laid over the top, and the dish is moved to the oven, where the magic truly happens. An upside-down tart emerges where the apples have been transformed into tender, sweet morsels nestled under a crisp pastry shell. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and you have a dessert that will impress at any dinner party or special occasion.
